Alzheimers - WHAT IS IT?

Alzeimer's disease is a progressive degenerative disease seen in an ever increasing rate because of an aging population.  Alzheimer's disease is when the nerves in the brain die in areas sensetive to memory and mental abilities.  This affects thinking, memory and judgment.  A person's ability is hindered in handling day to day activities.  There is no cure or treatment for this disease, thre is only treatment for its symptoms.

*Symptoms:

1. Isoloation from others

2. Change from normal behavior

3. Mood Swings

4. Personality changes

5. Forgets names of those close

6. Forgets recent experiences

7. Hiding things in strange places

8. Decreased interest in activities

9. Worried or depressed

Disease Progression is like aging in reverse, from functioning adult to being dependent.  This process represents,in most cases, several years of intellectual and personal decline.

The most important single act any family member can do is to join support groups that provide the family with information on how to deal with the disease process.  Experience is the best teacher and first hand experience is what these support groups have to offer.  The adult children need to make plans with their parents for the future.  There are legal and financial issues that need to be taken into consideration.

*Considerations:

1. Durable power of attorney- Someone who can make legal and financial decisions for the affected person.

2. Advanced Directives and Living Wills - inform physicians and medical personnel the kind of medical treatments the patient wants.

3. Long Term Care expenses.

4. Joint bank accounts - somone to assist with bill paying and keeping track of spending.

*Prepare for Role Changes:

Adult children may become the parent.  Adult children become the care givers and protectors making certain their family member will receive the care that is needed.   They will also have to evaluate whether or not the affected person will do well at adult day care(a good option for the family that needs to work during the day) They might have to make the decision whether or not an assisted living facility will be a better solution.  Remember that this is a progressive disease and more care may be needed with the passing of time.  A nursing home may be needed when it is necessary for more skilled professionals.  Home Health Aides are an option for clients living at home.  The Home Health Aide is a trained professional allowing the client to remain in their home where all things are familiar.

~Working with an Alzheimer's Patient~

Keep it simple, be patient, use distractions, avoid arguing about reality.  Remember the care giver and the adult child must take care of themselves.  Working with the Alzheimer's patient will take its tole on the care giver and you must rest and take time off.  This disease affects the entire family.   Join a support group and realize that the person with Alzheimer's disease is not the person they once were.  In order to care for them you will also need to take care of yourself.
